Safeguarding and Child Protection
How we screen the adults around children, structure sessions so no adult is ever alone with a single child, and report concerns as the law requires.
This policy is written and in effect as TRUETH practice. Formal board adoption and counsel review are in progress.
Protecting the children in our care is the foundation everything else is built on. This policy describes the practices we follow to keep sessions safe.
Background checks
Staff and instructors who work directly with children undergo a background check before working with children, and periodically thereafter, consistent with our obligations as an organization serving minors.
The two-adult rule
No instructor or staff member is ever alone with a single child. Sessions and any one-on-one interaction, such as a private conversation with a child, always take place with at least two adults present or within clear sight of other staff and, where present, parents.
Mandatory reporting
Staff and instructors are mandatory reporters under Washington law for suspected child abuse or neglect. Any suspicion of abuse or neglect, whether it involves someone connected to TRUETH or not, is reported to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
Training
Instructors and staff receive safeguarding training as part of onboarding, covering the two-adult rule, appropriate physical contact, and how to recognize and report a concern.

Status
These are TRUETH's current safeguarding practices. Formal board adoption of the written safeguarding policy, including any specific background-check vendor or renewal schedule, is in progress.
